along the Polish Coast

Although I have lived on the Baltic Sea for 4 years , it has always fascinated me. I am not drawn to the mountains at all. Inspired by other people's expeditions along the Polish Baltic coast, and after reading stories about such expeditions in Rowertour magazine, I decided to set off on such an expedition myself and face the forces of the Baltic. I designed the route so that it led as close as possible to the coast and ran away from busy highways. To develop it I used the coastal sections of the international bicycle route R-10 around the Baltic Sea. Its length in Poland is 356 km. and leads from Swinoujscie to Stilo near Leba. Ultimately, it is to run through Wladyslawowo , Gdynia , Gdansk , Elblag , Braniewo to the border crossing of...znego in Gronów. I chose the aforementioned Swinoujscie as the start of the expedition. I arrived here by train from Gdansk with changes in Gdynia and Szczecin after 9 hours of travel. In Swinoujscie I spent 3 days. The first was arrival , the second sightseeing and the third trip to Germany to the Island of Usedom which is a cycling eldorado. About this trip in a separate report. There is a lot to see in Swinoujscie. It is becoming more and more beautiful. The center has been renovated and a promenade has been built, along with a bicycle path. There are a lot of bicycle paths here, making it easier to explore the city on a saddle. They are slowly beginning to connect and can be reached practically everywhere , even to the German border. It is rare to ride on the street here. The main point not to be missed is the lighthouse. The first on the Polish coast , the largest in Poland and one of the largest in the world. Its height is 68 meters. To reach it you need to take a ferry. Still apropos of bicycles , in Swinoujscie as in Germany it is difficult to meet the popular highlanders. Urban cruisers of the swan or Dutchman type dominate here. On the fourth day I started the actual part of the trip. I headed in the direction of Kolobrzeg. In order to avoid the busy road No. 3 to Miedzyzdroje I took the R-10 bicycle trail. It leads along a dirt road through the forest, sometimes a bit bumpy, but with the sound of the sea in the background. Miedzyzdroje is famous for the festival of stars that used to take place here (since this year again). Until 2009 it was held in Gdansk. This event is commemorated by an avenue with casts of hands of popular and famous people. The pier here is also worth a look. However, a strong wind chased me off it quickly. From Miedzyzdroje I headed along road No. 102 in the direction of Dziwnow. It was renovated, the traffic on it was moderate, but I had to deal with a heavy 5-kilometer driveway at the exit from the town. There were also pedestrian and bicycle paths. On the way to Dziwnow I pass, among others, Wisełka , Kolczewo and Miedzywodzie. In Dziwnow I take a rest at the local beach. From Dziwnow to Łukęcin I continue along road no. 102 on the way meeting a lone pannier from Zielona Góra , who was doing the same route as me in the opposite direction. A short chat and then continue on the road to Łukęcin, where I again enter the R-10 bike trail, which takes me through the forest to Pobierowo. I try to buy a map here, because the one I've been using so far has just ended here. Its search ends in a fiasco and I cover the rest of the route to Kolobrzeg with a map from a tourist guide, unfortunately much less accurate. From Pobierowo pedals further along the R-10 trail to Trzęsacz. Here you must stop to see the ruins of a Gothic church regularly washed up by the Sea. When the temple was built ( the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries) it was as far as two kilometers from the shore. From Trzęsacz through Rewal I proceed to the lighthouse in Niechorze. The lighthouse here is particularly popular with tourists. We climb 208 stairs to the observation deck. I manage to visit it by a toss of the tape less than 5 minutes before closing. After visiting it, I eat lunch. In Niechorz the old adage , "he who shortens the road to the house does not return" proved true. On the advice of locals who told me that it is possible to go to Mrzezyno through the military training ground, as it is closed. This turned out to be untrue, as there was a barrier and a sign protected area. An attempt to go around the beach also came to nothing, because the descents were too steep to push through with a bicycle and panniers, and in addition it ended in rubbing my leg on the pedal. Furious with the considerable loss of time, I ride to Trzebiatow, full of monuments, through which I just pass at a walking pace, peering only at the sights from the saddle, and then continue in the direction of Mrzezyno, where I make a short stop. A bit past Trzebiatow on the left side of the road is a bike path. From Mrzezyno through the military areas of Rogowo village and the summer resort of Dzwirzyno I reach Kolobrzeg where I stop for the night. That day I rode 140 km. In Kolobrzeg it is worth stopping for longer, because in this city there is something to see. In addition to the beach , you must see the lighthouse built on an old fort. This factor caused it to have a massive round shape. Also worth a visit is the local harbor from where ships depart for Bornholm all year round. It is also worth a stroll through the renovated old town. From Kolobrzeg I took the direction of Ustka. I leave the city on a bicycle path between the sea and wetlands. I did not expect to have adventures on the first part of this stage. On the bike path I hit a broken bridge and for 20 minutes I push my bike on the beach like German pannier riders . Then at the airfield between Podczely and Ustron Morski I lose my way and again land on the path to Podczely. This time, however, I find the right way and ride through Sianożęty to Ustron Morski and then along the R-10 bike path to the lighthouse in Gaski. The lighthouse here is one of the most visited of its kind. It has more than 200 stairs. For the beautiful views from it, it is worth climbing there. After visiting it a portion of French fries and then continue on the road in the direction of Sarbinowo, to which the R-10 trail leads along a gravel road and then plunges into the forest. Halfway between Sarbinowo and Mielno I come across an obelisk informing about the course of the 16th geographic meridian. Here I also meet the same Germans who, between Kolobrzeg and Podczela, were pushing their bikes on the beach. Just before Mielno the trail becomes quite difficult , but only its last section, which ends in the center of the village. From Mielno pedals along the picturesque road between the Baltic Sea and Lake Jamno. In Łazy, next to the beach, I make a longer stop and then follow the R-10 trail to Bielkowo, and from there along road 203 through Dąbki I reach Darłowo. I do not like this city at all. Neglected market, mean and rude residents and no bar with tables outside. I manage to eat only thanks to the lady who let me bring my bike inside. With no regrets I leave Darlowo and pedal along the bike path to the lighthouse in Darlowko. On site it turns out that the lighthouse is no longer in operation. However, thanks to a lady who came here from Darlowo especially for me, I manage to visit it. It may not impress with its height, as it was made of a brick building of pilots from 1885 on which a low tower finished with a glass laterna was added. After visiting the building, one inquires about a shortcut to Jaroslawiec via Kopan. Tourists traveling here advise me against this route due to the deep sand. It's very late to risk it, so I take a detour through Barzowice, while upping the pace, but in Drozdowo the steep uphill took me quite a while again. I could only look at the lighthouse in Jaroslawiec and rest by it. I do the last shopping here and receive a phone call from the lady at the lodging in Ustka, who started to worry about me, no wonder it was getting late and I still had a long way to go to Ustka. I immediately take a detour, because without a pass I can forget about entering the training ground. Through Łącko I get to the village of Zaleskie, and from there straight on the asphalt to Ustka, where I arrive at the lodge after 23 p.m. It turns out that this was the longest stage of the whole trip 154 km. In Ustka noteworthy is, of course, the lighthouse, which, along with a neo-Gothic church, miraculously survived the turmoil of war. It is also worth a stroll on the promenade, unfortunately not available for bicycles.

Hello, I drove this route a few days ago. 6 nights, 7 days, 630 km. Island of Usedom-Swinoujscie-Hel-Gdansk. It was not easy. Lots of climbs, which for me are difficult, severaland roads being repaired, I also had to score detours due to panniers and sand. But it was worth it. The views and places I reached are priceless. I recommend it to everyone. Margaret

  • in 2015, my husband and I drove the route from Goleniow(where the car stayed) to Hel.Adventure wonderful despite various surprises we are very satisfied.Slowinski Park and jego marshes we traveled on dry feet, we just happened to be in the dry season, the views are unforgettable:) The route is very varied, although in many places it is not marked and you have to rely on intuition, maps (necessary) or people's advice (and they are not always competent).Very well remembered was the route between Lazki and Dabki, instead of going the further way we decided that we will walk a few kilometers on the beach - it was an ordeal.Sucked all the strength, but now we remember it fondly, although we have no intention of repeating this mistake. We drove at a walking pace, a lot of sightseeing, so the time spent on this road is 7 days:), the weather was perfect because 22-25* in August. This year we plan to push ourselves to Swinoujscie and reach (if we have enough strength) the Sand Spit on the Vistula Spit:) I encourage all of you, even those less cyclists, you can really handle it and the experience will be unforgettable:)

I drove 2 years ago at a walking pace with sightseeing everything along the way and it took me 5 days from Krynica to Swinoujscie (528km). I recommend to everyone beautiful views andwildlife (moose, foxes, snakes, wild boars) The only downside is in the Slovinski National Park I hit a storm and walked carrying my bike in the swamp up to my knees in the mud for 3h but what doesn't kill us makes us stronger :) this year I will definitely return there !

Hello everyone , I covered this beautiful route together with a colleague on 08/09/2017-11/09/2017. the first stage to Kolobrzeg 120 km we covered in the rain which caused przemoken and temporarily lowered the morale of the team, but a quick recovery and firecracker on :) The second day was the route Kolobrzeg -> Wicie, the weather is already better, but the trail is sometimes badly marked and I'll write gently damn cobblestone road....... but the views compensate for everything. The third day was already a hard squeeze for us from Wicie to Wladyslawowo a lot of km, but of course we made it:0 the last stage was just Wladyslawowo_Hel ferry to Gdynia and cycling to GD. Memories amazing I recommend to anyone who loves this form of activity:)

The route was covered by four of us. The main intention was to visit all the lighthouses on the Polish coast starting from Swinoujscie to Krynica Morska. We used severaland times from the R10 route and I am disappointed in terms of signage, route mileage(forest and sandy road, cobblestone laid 200 years ago). More we had to use normal asphalt roads. Other than that, super adventure, traveled 540 km in six days. The entire Hel Peninsula in the rain, but fortunately we were able to find accommodation at a school and did not have to pitch tents in the rain. We have better and better campgrounds on the coast, where you can find a place to stay at any time with a tent and a warm shower. Only one punctured tire and other than that no malfunctions. Recommended.

I just returned from the route Swinoujscie -Hel - Krynica Morska( Sands ) in total I did 530km. The first day by sand to Swinoujscie and 17km already by bike to MiedzyzdrojeThe next day Mielno (137 km), then Rowy 107 km, then Jastarnia 153 km, and the last day Hel, then the ferry to Gdansk and the direction of the Vistula Spit 116 km. The whole trip took me 5 days, sleeping because of the rain in accommodation sought on the spot. It was difficult to get accommodation, but when people see how wet I was, they took pity. The worst part of the R10 route was Kluki - Izbica (Izbica marshes reserve) up to my waist in mud. The best section miedzyzdroje -Mielno - Ustka and the peninsula.

Just today my wife and I came back from Gdynia after driving this route. Not all the time R10 due to storms and because of that the roads were quite soft so we had to mess with theroute.Overall a fantastic adventure and fabulous views(when it's not raining). PKP Monday 04.07.2016 from W-wa 6.48 to Swinoujscie despite assurances a week earlier the lady at the ticket window did not provide wagons with room for bikes(there were supposed to be 6):( bikes stood at the beginning and at the end of the train(we managed after swapping seats with other passengers and we had them under our eyes). We went on the spur only with sleeping bags and managed to find places to sleep at prices ranging from 70-120 PLN per night(for 2 people). An interesting fact is that you can ride the training ground in Jaroslawiec, but only in July (no exercises) and the pass can be arranged in Ustka (just the other side :( ) or earlier via the Internet. As for the route itself, it's really cool and probably already described a thousand times :) the only comment is to the people who marked it out - they could so once in 2 years with a scooter with a few buckets of paint to ride it and mark it:) especially just after the intersections.New gravel roads were added, someone cut down the trees so the signs disappeared too :).Generally happy and recommend.

Hello. route along the Polish coast we covered the three of us before the vacations from 19.06- 01.07. 2015.As we live in the Lesser Poland, by train we reached Szczecin. We started our cycling route from Szczecin to Swinoujscie and then along the coast to Hel, by ship to Gdynia, then Gdansk, Frombork and Braniewo. Later Malbork and Tczew, from where we left by train to Bielsko-B. We did the route mainly on side roads, bike trails, the R 10 road, overnight stays in agritourism farms, and visiting interesting places. Daily sections to ride were from 85- 115 km. In total, I rode about 1100 km. The weather at the beginning of the trip was a little rainy , but it was manageable. I recommend!!!

  • Hey All. I see a few people are keen on a little cycling adventure at the end of July, so I guess there will be a chance to get along ;o) If nothing spoils my plans thenI'm betting on July 25 or 26 as the starting day. Route: Swinoujscie - Krynica, of course on the way visiting all the more interesting seaside towns . Rather tourist pace , daily distance depending on weather conditions and not only ;) but probably within 70 - 100 km . ( If you get a shorter day you can also survive ;) As at the beginning of July the date of departure will be fairly confirmed to me it will be possible to move on to specifics. Greetings cycling tourists ( and perhaps future companions )

    • 24.06.2015
  • Hello, I am looking for willing people to cover the route Swinoujscie-Hel (optionally to Krynica Morska depends on strength) When? Second half of July exact date to be determined:) I plan to spend the night rather in a tent no unless the weather breaks then some cheap guesthouse for one two nights. Greetings and look forward to the experience :)

  • Most routes along the coast start in Swinoujscie and run from west to east. Is there any particular reason for this? Someone has experience with driving in the other stron, that is, from Gdansk to Swinoujscie?

    • 31.05.2015
  • Hello, My colleague and I are getting ready for a trip along the Polish coast, starting in Swinoujscie on 04.06 in the morning (train arrives around 8.00). The minimum plan is to dojechike through Hell to Gdansk, and maximum to Krynica Morska (Piasek) - then return by train to Wawa. Going out with panniers, accommodation in roadside guesthouses - without special route planning. Daily, depending on my mood and the weather, I intend to ride about 100 km. Those interested in accompanying me are welcome to contact me. zbyszek.ruba@gmail. com (601 36 87 55)

I covered the route Gdansk - Krynica Morska (Piaski) - Gdansk. Then by ferry to Hel and then ultimately to Swinoujscie. The route was very varied (from sand, forest ducts, bruku, bicycle paths). The most challenging section was around the Słowiński National Park. I was advised against the Izbica - Kluki section (marshy area), so I took a circuitous asphalt road to Smoldzin. A comfortable stretch from Ustron Morski to Kolobrzeg. I also recommend visiting German resorts not far from Swinoujscie. Mirek

Sensational route, with small variations and extension to Krynica Morska and then to Malbork came out evenly 1000 km in 9 days. Great variety of surfaces - from highway, paving stones, through light gravel, paved forests to sand and the beach. The forests in the vicinity of Swinoujscie, the Pogorzelica-Mrzezyno path, the area around Orzechowo and the Hel peninsula are sensational by bike. The Kashubian Eye and the estuary of the Vistula River, as well as the Vistula Spit are worth hooking up with. Sometimes it's better to avoid some parts of the R-10, like the Kluki-Leba route, which from what I heard was terribly waterlogged. The route rather easy, more a test of endurance :)

  • I plan to take this route in July with my six-year-old, but of course only part of it. I think so about 200 km we can do, maybe a little less. I was tentatively planningThe stretch from Leba to Hel, then the finish in Gdynia. I want the route to be easy and safe. No long climbs or excess sand. We will sleep in a tent. Could anyone who knows the area advise, advise against or share good advice? I will be grateful for all of them. Thank you and best regards

It's time for me to go! :) I have been dreaming about this route for several years but something always fell out.... This year it was just a priority, so I persuaded my boyfriend to take an active vacation :) TwelveTour days (28.08-8.09), usually 60-70km each day, including one day of 20km in a downpour so we gave up and on another day we stayed longer on Hel :) A total of 595km, as we also explored the cities mostly by bike. The route very varied, unfortunately detours by the presence of larger lakes. Bike paths in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship very pleasant, but in the Pomeranian Voivodeship the stairs began.... The whole thing topped with the icing on the cake in the form of Hel and the wonderful Tri-City with a brilliantly developed bicycle infrastructure. The weather was perfect for us, I recommend late August and early September, because we had mostly beautiful weather, traffic and the siege of resorts was much less, so it was more pleasant to visit and safer to ride on the road. Only some of the nights were already cooler, which under the tent gave us a feeling, but a warmer sleeping bag and it would have been optimal. There was no problem with the campgrounds, sometimes we were only alone in the whole field :) I don't give away the details, it's best to go by feel, choose the routes yourself and let the adventure take you! I, for one, am happiest that I was able to realize this dream, and I wholeheartedly recommend it!

  • I plan to go on the road next Thursday (27.06.2013), I hope the weather will be fine. I will modify your route a little, because I start it from Police (zachodnionio-pomorskie voivodeship).Pomerania) and go through Germany to Swinoujscie, and then it's all the way to Gdansk::)))))

    • 25.06.2013
  • Update. You can legally bypass Trzebiatow. A 14-kilometer-long bicycle road between Pogorzelica and Mrzezyno has been opened. The new route significantly shortens the route from Swinoujscieto Kolobrzeg and makes it no longer necessary to go along the busy highway through Trzebiatow overstretching the road. What a pity that now I do not cover this route , and apparently this is not the first new bike path on the coast excluding, of course, the routes Kolobrzeg - Podczele , Hel - Puck and Sopot - Gdansk

    • 08.10.2012
  • Some fragments of difficult, smashed by putter forest roads, however, I recommend, the section Kolobrzeg - Ustronie morskie, the first European league

    • 28.11.2011
