Pieniny - Dunajec River Gorge

This route has two variants. The first presented on the map - a little more ambitious, and the second, which I will describe shortly. Both variants will allow us to see the Dunajec Gorge in its full splendor - the route leads right along the river on a bicycle and pedestrian trail (no cars allowed). This is an ideal option for the Sunday cyclist, families with children, or the more advanced cyclist with the beginning of the season in mind (in the more ambitious variant we have an interesting asphalt climb, and on top of that the southern slope will provide us with no snow in the spring months). We start in Szczawnica. We can leave the car in the parking lot next to the Dunajec River (as of 2010: the first hour 2.5pln, each subsequent hour 2pln). We take the red trail. At the beginning of the...ątek cobblestone - here, too, concentration, as pedestrians are very numerous and they do not give a damn about the fact that there is a separate bicycle path. The first part (to the border with Slovakia) runs on asphalt. The route is very quiet. At the border the gravel begins. Nothing serious, but it's good to have tires other than slicks here (admittedly, I managed on semi - slicks with a child on the seat in the back, but in the end, despite 5atm, I punctured the tire and blew out the tube...). On this gravel road (still a red trail) we go all the way to the Red Monastery itself. The road is so obvious that there is nothing to write here. Just remember to stick to the red signs - or the river, which is one thing :) At the Red Monastery there is a lot of space for rest. Here you can also decide whether you choose the ambitious plan or return to Szczawnica by the same road you took. The return along the same road will be about 20km in total and practically non - stop on flat terrain. The more ambitious version is about 32km and a 12% asphalt climb for 4km (the highest point is about 690m above sea level, the Red Monastery is at about 470m. Choosing a more ambitious plan, we opt for a very pleasant loop. From the Red Monastery we head southeast on an asphalt road (very little traffic). We drive all the way along the valley floor, slowly climbing up (this section can be quite tough in strong winds). The road is quite pleasant - interesting views, the idyll of the Slovak countryside.... After about 8km we reach the village of Velky Lipnik (on the way straight ahead all the time, we pass only one intersection, where we head straight ahead). In the village of Velky Lipnik, a piece behind the "center" we turn left. And here we start a more concrete climb. In fact, it consists of 3 turns - once you turn in, you will find yourself at the top in a moment :) The drive itself is so great that somewhere in the middle of it we can see the Tatra Mountains - divine views :) Then just downhill to the village of Lesnica and then back on the asphalt along the yellow trail to the Dunajec Gorge. Here we join the familiar red trail and return to Szczawnica on it.

  • The route is beautiful especially in the autumn mu start in Sromowce go to Szczawnica then to Jaworek worth seeing the famous Musical Sheepfold, then return to Szczawnicaon the bike road to Sromowce and in leśnica where there used to be a border crossing turn left to Slovakia I do not recommend the restaurant in leśnica expensive and cheat Poles then uphill quite stiff but views oh....and return on the Slovakian side to the Red Monastery footbridge over the Dunajec river and we are in Sromowce .I RECOMMEND because of the close proximity to my home I try to pass the route every year in the autumn, and this stiff climb in Slovakia can be overcome by riding a bike because it is short and the car traffic is negligible it is worth recommending .....

A great route, varied in views for off-road amateurs. Not too demanding, the mentioned climbs are a short part of the route, so this should not discouragecać.

I sincerely recommend the route. Relatively short, with one longer and steep climb of 12%. I suggest making the ascent first, at the top in the hut I recommend with aimne "beer" and photos (really nice views). Then super downhill from the mountain all the way to the Red Monastery and, well, a fabulous return along the path along the Dunajec River.

View-wise, a revelation. You have to be lucky to have little foot traffic along the Dunajec River. Looser in Slovakia... :)

  • Well, so the route is pleasant, although I do not recommend driving on thin tires, the scenic value is this until it is difficult to focus on the road, and you need to because people are walking and driving, beautiful nature and mountains

Passed for the second time :) In the opposite direction, i.e. Szczawnica - Leśnica - Leśnickie Siodło - Wielki Lipnik - Czerwony Klasztor - Szczawnica Easy and pleasant routeon, especially the section Lesnica - Lesnickie Saddle - Red Monastery where there is very little traffic. After driving up to the top of Lesnickie Saddle, I recommend a break to admire the views.

  • I ride with friends who don't like hills by an easier route.Begin like docent,to the Red Monastery, then asphalt to Lysa, over the dam, downhill to Sromowce Wyżne,return to Sromowce Wyżne.The route is about 36 km. light, with no uphill stretches, you need to be careful on the stretch Szczawnica-Czerwony Klasztor, at weekends there is a lot of traffic.
