About Łebie

f you are spending holidays in Łeba or Ustka, it is advised to cease sun bathing for at least one day to discover fascinating places: mysterious stone circles in Węsiory, ominous castle of the Teutonic Knights in Bytów, marvellous biological specimens in Smołdzino or moving sand dunes in Rąbka near Łeba.

To begin with, the town Ustka functions as a sea port. Seaside promenade and extraordinary, sandy beaches make this place each summer a bustling holiday centre. Going east, along the Gardno Lake, the route leads to Smołdzino, where one can find a Museum of Słowiński National Park. Two flat inshore lakes, Gardno and Łebsko, occupy over half of the park’s territory; there are breathtaking views stretching away from Rowokół mountain.

On the east border of the Park the town Łeba is located. The place attracts tourists not only from Poland thanks to its beautiful beach, mysterious ruins of gothic church destroyed by the moving sands and a unique in this part of Europe attraction – moving sand dunes. The dune hills reach a height of 42 metres above sea level. They are the highest ones in Middle Europe and they create a truly desert landscape. Under the pressure of the western winds, the dunes may move for ten metres per year and cover even high forest territories. Characteristic “smoking” of dune ridges may be observed in such cases.

The mystery enthusiasts will not miss an occasion to visit Węsiory and watch enigmatic stone circles which are preserved in such a good state only in three places in Poland. Over the panorama of Bytów, a place which is from hundreds of years an important urban centre, dominates a gothic castle. It was one of the biggest fortresses guarding the borders of the Teutonic Knights’ territory from east. Nowadays, after the renovation, it is adapted to a museum offering ethnographical and historical collections.
