Around the Tatra Mountains - day 1

A difficult, demanding expedition. There will be those who can cross the Slovak wall of the Tatra Mountains in one day, but for me it misses the point, because we lose the charm of these beautiful mountains. An expedition typically for panniers - really, it's better to sleep in a tent in nature than in an expensive guesthouse. But to the point. We set off from Kroscienko - a popular holiday destination. Unfortunately, the first part of the route is the main road, it is impossible to avoid it. In Krosnica we turn left to Niedzica. Here begins the first significant uphill - about 4 km, quite steep. Once we deal with it, the descent to the dam awaits us. We turn off at the border crossing and after a few meters we are already in Slovakia. We will see Poland later...about the day after tomorrow :) The route through Spišská Nová Ves is calm, although it climbs all the way uphill. The culmination of this is about 5 km uphill to an altitude of over 1000 meters with a couple of serpentines. Then downhill ( you can do more than 70 km/h). After about 3 km, we turn onto a side road leading through the villages of Vyborna and Lednak towards Tatranská Kotlina. And HERE beware of CIGAN CHILDREN, of which the village is full. When they see a bicycle they usually start running after it, trying to snatch whatever they can from the rack. Besides, they can use many vegetables to throw at the poor cyclist. Let's get away from there as soon as possible. Behind Tatranska Kotlina there is only the road up ahead - we are entering the Tatra Mountains proper. The ascent will be about 30 km long - it's terribly tiring, but we have to deal with it. We pass such towns as Stary Smokovec, where it is worth stopping. Behind it, the uphill gets stronger, the serpentines begin. Eventually, however, we reach the mountain itself - Strebskie Pleso. To get to the lake you need to turn right from the main road. There, stick to the main road all the way, it is not difficult to get there. To pitch a tent you have to leave the national park !!! We head towards the village - Podbansky. Immediately after the placard ending TPN flows a mountain stream, where there are many places to pitch a tent. It remains only to eat and rest before tomorrow !

  • This is not a route around the Tatra Mountains. This route is barely half the distance.

I recommend! I traveled the route alone in the direction from Zakopane through the foothills of the High Tatras, Slovakia, Western Tatras and ending in Zakopane, came out a little over 200km, thankswhy the route was enough for a whole day full of unforgettable experiences and challenges :) The least pleasant section is around Liptovsky Mikulas, where there is a lot of traffic and the views are not as pleasing to the eye as the other stages of the route. Keep in mind the long and steep climb to Kvacanskie sedlo, which doesn't start until after Liptovsky Mikulas and is the most challenging section on the route. Personally, I would choose a road bike to ride this route (if I had one) but it is also possible on a "mountain". However, it's a good idea to change to slicks tires, I highly recommend the Schwalbe Durano version for MTB bikes, rolled 26x1.1. This was my first route of more than 200km in length, I usually do routes of about 100km, so if reading this you're wondering if you can do it, I think you can. Just be sure not to charge, set out early and have plenty of food and drink. I also think that an interesting alternative might be to spread the route over two days and camp near the lagoon at Liptovsky Mikulas. Greetings!

My first mountain route, the difficulty of the climbs surprised me a little, but the satisfaction of returning to the starting point was enormous. I recommend it to everyone.

  • This is a very demanding route but it is worth the ride, if only for the beautiful views of the high Tatra Mountains

  • Familiar terrain, I myself drove the Tatra Mountains around. I recommend to all undecided.

  • By far the most difficult of the 3 days. We practically ascend uphill for 70% of the route.
