About Klodawa

Klodawa is a charming town located on the Rgilewka River - a tributary of the Warta River. Tourists are very eager to visit this place because of the large number of historical monuments, the possibility to relax by the river, and above all to visit the famous Salt Mine, which is probably the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. It is located between Kolo and Kutno and allows descending to a depth of about six hundred meters.

The mining plant was established as early as 1949 and has been open to the public since 2004. Compared to Poland's most famous salt mine, Wieliczka, the Klodawa mine is just beginning its tourist activities. Therefore, one has to be lenient with organizational issues, but they are compensated by the unusual atmosphere of the place and affordable prices. Edible salt is not the only product of the Klodawa Mine. Bathing salt and salt for sprinkling roads in winter are also produced here.

Before leaving, call the mine's tourist service office to arrange a specific time for the tour to begin. It is important to note that whether you want to visit the mines individually or in a larger group, you need to arrange not only a specific time, but also a date. Therefore, it is worth contacting the staff far in advance. The tour itself lasts between two and three hours.

Before we descend to the bottom of the mine itself, a little safety training awaits us, during which we will receive the necessary helmets. Adventurers are sure to be impressed by the descent down the mine shaft at a speed of six meters per second, or about two minutes of rapid descent.
Once there, guides will show you around the various corridors and chambers, starting, of course, with the chapel of St. Kinga, shrouded in legend, who is the patron saint of miners. You can see the equipment that is used to extract the salt, and on the walls you can see prehistoric paintings made by cavemen, who were said to have inhabited the area in very remote times. Finally, you can see a grotto with unusual acoustics, where concerts are occasionally held, and the chamber of none other than Count Dracula himself.

All those who decide to visit the Klodawa Mine will certainly not be disappointed. Convenient prices, attractions are not lacking, and the atmosphere is unique. The only problems are the rather poorly marked access to the mine itself, as well as restrictions on visiting. Those with heart problems or high blood pressure, however, should refrain from visiting.
