Jakub Wujek became famous as the author of an excellent translation of the Holy Scriptures into Polish. Wągrowiec is the hometown of Rev. Jakub Wujek, the author of the translation of the Holy Scriptures into Polish. He received his initial education at the Wągrowiec Cistercian school. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1568 in Pultusk, and since then devoted himself to intensive preaching and writing. In 1584, the authorities of the Jesuit order commissioned him to translate the Holy Scriptures into Polish. The basis of the translation was the Latin version of the Bible, the so-called Vulgate. The entire Holy Scriptures in Polish were not published until two years after Fr. Jakub Wujek's death in 1599. The "Wujko" Bible served as the primary Polish Catholic translation for more than three and a half centuries. The monument to Rev. Jakub Wujek, carved from sandstone, was unveiled and dedicated on May 27, 1973 by Rev. Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński.
