To the northeast, 6 km from Wągrowiec, is the picturesquely situated village of Tarnowo Pałuckie. It lies on the route of the Cistercian trail. It is precisely there that you can meet the moststarszy wooden church on Polish soil - St. Nicholas Church. Probably, it was built in the last quarter of the fourteenth century.Research of the wood used in its construction proved that it was cut in the autumn/winter of 1373/1374.This church has survived to this day in a little changed form. Inside the church there is the most magnificent set of polychromies in Poland, (multicolored painting ornaments decorating e.g. the nave, ceiling, chancel). This polychrome has historical and artistic value.
