  • The monastery and church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was founded by the Cistercians in the 14th century. To this day, you can admire the beautiful cloister and the altarpiece reconstructed according to the image of theunk from the 18th century. The monastery belonged to the Cistercian order from around 1392 to 1835/36. At the end of the 14th century it was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1747 and its reconstruction was probably completed after 1799. After secularization carried out in 1835/6, the post-convent buildings housed, among other things, the county court and a prison. During World War II, the temple housed a military warehouse, which was set on fire by German troops retreating from the city. As a result of the fire, the buildings were destroyed on the night of January 20-21, 1945. It was restored in the post-war period. Particularly valuable is the late Gothic sculpture from the early 16th century, which depicts Mary with the Child. The richly decorated conciliar altar, the papal throne and the lectorium located in the church were used during the millennium celebrations and the Holy Father's visit to Gniezno in 1997. In the monastery you can also visit the underground where the monks were buried. Inside the monastery buildings there is a cloistered cloistered cloister, with a 25m deep well in its center. To enter the monastery complex, you need to reach the second gate, at which there is an information board. Within the walls you can visit the cloisters and the inner courtyard (viridarium), in the center of which there is a well. In the church it is worth noting the altarpiece reconstructed according to the image from the 18th century.
