The Germans called the Pomeranian Wall Die Pommernstellung, or the Pomeranian Position. The line of fortifications began to be built back in the 1930s and was intended to protect eastern Germany from strikingwith the Polish army. The 900 concrete structures plus anti-tank barrages, minefields, etc. were built along a 300-kilometer stretch from Darlowko to Gorzow Wielkopolski. In 1945, the fortifications were already outdated, but combined with numerous lakes, wetlands and forests in the Walecki and Drawskie lake districts, they formed a difficult belt to cross.I suggest you start visiting the remains of the great fortifications in Szczecinek. You will find the shelters by the road to Barwice near the campground. In 1945, their task was to block the isthmus between Lake Trzesiecko and Lake Wielimie. One of them, considered the largest in the area, was two-story, armed with heavy machine guns, and on the east side in an anti-tank cannon in an armored dome. The underground section contained ammunition and food stores, as well as crew quarters. It is said that several German soldiers were still hiding in this bunker for several months after the end of the war, but eventually surrendered. On the road about 100 meters east of the bunker (at the height of today's campground) was a movable system of road barriers. Looking at the massive construction of the shelters, we must remember that in 1945 the attacking soldiers saw only a small upper part of the shelters. The rest was covered with earth.
