Biskupin Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum in Biskupin has been in operation since 1950, although the first discoveries in the area date back to 1933. The falling waters of a nearby lake uncovered wooden structures, which were spotted by a local teacher, Walenty Swiss. He informed the archaeologist, Jozef Kostrzewski, of this fact. A year later, excavation work began under the leadership of the professor, which was interrupted by the war. They were resumed in 1946, and from then on they were directed for many years by Professor Zdzislaw Rajewski. The historic castle, located on Lake Biskupin, dates back to the Lusatian culture period. Surrounded by a wooden wall, the settlement was inhabited by about 1,000 people, engaged in animal husbandry, farming and crafts. In the reserve you can now visit three reconstructed huts and look at their furnishings. It is an important point on the so-called Piast Trail and one of the largest archaeological reserves in Europe. Every year an Archeological Festival is held here, during which one can observe battle reconstructions, demonstrations by falconers or horse stuntmen, as well as take part in talks, concerts, lectures and workshops. Since 1994, the Archaeological Museum in Biskupin has been a Monument of History.

An excellent, extremely accessible history lesson on my children made an incredible impression. The handmade coin turned out to be a great souvenir and an interesting exponate at school.

  • Visiting the ancient settlement in Biskupin is most attractive in September. That's when a fantastic archaeological festival takes place there. You can become a convict in the trialabout witchcraft, taste scones made using a method as old as the Bishop's castle, learn to mint coins, and admire ancient handicraft and craft techniques. Peat deposits contributed to the preservation of the wooden castle, built in the 8th century BC by tribes of the Lusatian culture. The local archaeological open-air museum is considered one of the most interesting in Europe. The site is still an area of research.
