Opole is a great place for a weekend getaway. The historic city of Silesia on the Oder River located between two metropolises: Wroclaw and Katowice, is the main economic, scientific, cultural and administrative center of the province.
Opole is one of the oldest cities in our country, hence its cultural and architectural richness - in a word, the history of this stronghold is impossible to explore in one day, but if you set aside a whole weekend for it, then who knows... maybe you can see everything.
Opole's riverside location has shaped the city's character. Noteworthy is the old riverbed of the Oder River, faithful to the city, called Młynówka and mistakenly associated by some with a canal. Historic townhouses situated just above the water's surface bring to mind the buildings of the famous Venice. Hence the idea to launch the illumination of the so-called "Opole Venice". At night you can feel like you are on a gondolier's boat in Italy. There are also two historic bridges on the Młynówka River itself.
Some may find it hard to believe, but Opole has its own leaning tower, which brings the city even closer to Italy. It is there, or more precisely in Pisa, that the more famous leaning tower is located. However, the Opole tower is actually the tower of a castle, demolished by 20th-century Polish authorities. The structure, though perhaps not as famous as the Pisa monument, is just as old. Its foundations date back to the kings of the Piast dynasty - hence the name Piast Tower.
The city's showpiece is the representative Krakowska Street, located in the center. It starts from the historic market square and runs towards Liberty Square. Along the street you will find everything tourists like most, including the Mercure Opole Hotel and Galeria Centrum.
Opole boasts a zoo located on an island. The place has 89 species of birds, 73 species of mammals, 43 species of invertebrates, 11 species each of reptiles and amphibians, including 3 lowland gorillas and 4 California sea lions. It is worth mentioning that seals can only be seen here. The garden is enrolled in the European Association of Zoological Gardens, which is a major achievement for the city.
Opole is the capital of the "Festival of Polish Song". This fact is probably no stranger to anyone. However, not every fan of the festival has had the opportunity to see the Avenue of the Stars of Polish Song, where Czeslaw Niemen, Krzysztof Krawczyk, Marek Grechuta and Edyta Górniak, among others - who are stars promoted by the festival - have been commemorated. Not everyone has also seen the Millennium Amphitheater, a modern building, a place where memorable concerts are held, where great musical talents are selected.
The city, of course, has a rich tourist infrastructure, so if you get bored with sightseeing you can stop by one of the many restaurants, such as Stark. Have fun in the clubs: Aqarium, Studio13 or Drake. Spend the night in the best of hotels: the Mercure, Europa. Opole never falls asleep, always ready to provide you with entertainment.
