Attractions of Malbork
1. Teutonic Castle - 200 m
The Teutonic Castle in Malbork is the largest Gothic castle complex not only in Europe, but in the whole world. It was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, and for a century was the seat of, among others, the Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order, the rulers of Prussia and the kings of the Kingdom of Poland. The building is divided into three parts: High Castle (with a huge stateroom, farm rooms, a church), Middle Castle (constituting palatial living quarters) and Low Castle (mainly external fortifications, towers, defensive fortifications).
2. staging "The Siege of Malbork."
One of the most interesting events that take place on the grounds of Malbork Castle is the cyclical annual event "Siege of Malbork." Although the main part of the event is a reenactment of the events that took place in 1410 between the armies of the Kingdom of Poland and the Teutonic Order, the event itself is full of family attractions. Every year in July there are fairs, workshops (including calligraphy, military art, archery), tournaments and various shows (including knights, early dance shows, juggling demonstrations, horse and artillery displays). Numerous booths with hot and cold snacks, drinks and handicrafts are set up at the castle. History buffs will also find something for themselves: for several days of the festival there are numerous lectures, workshops and talks, featuring researchers and historians from all over Poland.
3. church of St. John the Baptist - 190 m
The Church of St. John the Baptist in Malbork is a modest Gothic church that was built on the site of a 13th-century church, the oldest in the city. Although the original church was destroyed in the middle of the fifteenth century during an armed struggle, it was decades later that the building, which still exists today, was rebuilt. The brick building is characterized by a compact, massive structure, but its interior is particularly interesting, where one can admire, among other things, bas-reliefs, Renaissance epitaphs, two magnificent altars and numerous religious objects.
4. the Nogat River - cruises and canoeing
An interesting family attraction in Malbork is the opportunity to take a boat ride on the Nogat River, a river that flows right past the magnificent Teutonic Castle. During the cruise, you can admire not only the majestic building, but also the Old Town of Malbork and green corners and bird sanctuaries. Cruises begin at the water port right next to the castle and last about 1 hour.
5. dinosaur park in Malbork
DinoPark in Malbork is a great attraction for families with children. Its main part is a 1350-meter-long educational path, where more than 40 huge, moving models of ancient reptiles are placed. However, there are many more attractions waiting in DinoPark! Here you can see, among others, the Dragon Park, the Museum of Fossils and the Cave Village. An extensive playground in the Land of Play awaits the youngest, and for the slightly older ones - shows in the 5D cinema, a rope park, a 3D picture exhibition and a laser obstacle course. A unique attraction of this place are shows... dinosaur training! They use the latest technology and robotics, so you can experience amazing effects and a great show where an animator will try to tame a dinosaur. The DinoPark in Malbork also hosts a number of regular events (such as Night Sightseeing, Space Battle, Witch Rally). The facility is well adapted to the needs of people with disabilities and families with young children, and there are many rest areas and several food and beverage facilities.
6 Outdoor Fortification Museum
The Outer Museum of Fortifications in Malbork is a path that runs through the city, covering the remains of ancient fortifications and walls. There are as many as twelve points along its route, including: Guardhouse, Arsenal, Pottery Tower, Stables and Latin School. During the tour, visitors can see, among other things, part of the fortified walls or the site of what was once the medieval marketplace, which was the center of social life and commerce. On the path there are multimedia points where films and presentations are broadcast, and the whole is made more attractive by Malbork's mascot - Marianek - who tells the history of the city in an amusing and simple way. A great advantage of the tour is not only the opportunity to supplement knowledge about the city and the former defensive buildings, but also the fact that the attraction is completely free for all tour participants.
7. castle in Kwidzyn
While Malbork Castle is certainly the most popular Teutonic building in the entire region, it is not the only defensive building from the Middle Ages. Just over 30 kilometers from Malbork is the beautiful Gothic Castle in Kwidzyn, which was built in the 14th century. It is interesting to note that the buildings include the world's longest arcaded porch - a dunghill a dozen meters high - which is more than 50 meters high. In Kwidzyn Castle you can see, among other things, an almost completely preserved chapel with wall paintings from the early 14th century, as well as a perfectly preserved 15th-century Teutonic bombardment. The castle's interiors now house a museum with a rich collection of numismatics, porcelain, medieval and Renaissance craft items, as well as ethnographic and faunal exhibitions. An additional attraction for visitors is the archaeological exhibit, which houses Stone Age objects.
8. castle in Gniew
Lovers of architecture and visiting historical buildings can also take a slightly farther trip to Gniew (about 45km from Malbork), where there is another medieval castle, today serving as a luxury hotel. Particularly noteworthy is the large SPA & Wellness area, as well as saunariums, swimming pools, whirlpool tubs, water attractions for children and brine graduation towers, which can be used by guests of the property. The hotel has luxurious, comfortable rooms, conference rooms and a restaurant, which serves excellent specialties of Polish and European cuisine. Castle Gniew also has no shortage of attractions for the youngest - there are sports fields, a large outdoor playground, bicycle rental and a marina from which gondolas depart.
9. boulevards in Tczew and bridges over the Vistula River
Just 20 kilometers from Malbork is Tczew, a small, atmospheric town that is famous for its beautiful Vistula River boulevards. The promenades stretch on both sides of the Vistula River, along which there are restaurants, bars, resting places and playgrounds for children. A major attraction of the Vistula boulevards are the water streetcars that regularly run between Tczew and Gniew.
It is worth noting the bridges over the Vistula River in and around Tczew. The most important of these is the Road Bridge, which was built in the mid-19th century and at the time was one of the longest bridges in the world (over 830 meters long). Although the Tczew bridge is on the list of world technical monuments, there is a slightly younger and less representative Knybawa Bridge in the vicinity.
Many other attractions can also be found in Tczew. Worth visiting include the Vistula River Museum and the 13th century Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. Tczew also has a Dutch windmill from the early 19th century, an over 100-year-old water tower and the beautiful Old Town, which is the central part of the town.
10. the Old Town in Elbląg
The history of Elblag dates back to 1237 - it was then that the city was founded by the first master of the Teutonic Order, Herman von Balka. Today Elblag's Old Town impresses with its architecture and historic buildings. Interestingly, even the new buildings under construction are kept in the ancient style. Many monuments are located within the Old Town, including the magnificent St. Nicholas Church, dating back to the 13th century, the perfectly preserved Market Gate (a remnant of the old fortifications and defensive walls) and the Church of the Holy Spirit. Also very impressive is the so-called Church Path, a narrow alley between tenement houses, which connects the three historic churches. The Old Town in Elblag is also the center of social, cultural and commercial life: there are stores, restaurants, museums, bars and beer gardens open in the summer season.
After seeing Elblag's Old Town, it's worth visiting the local Museum of Archeology and History, which is located in the building of the former Teutonic Castle. Among the thousands of exhibits, the oldest European eyeglasses from the 15th century, a medieval giterna (musical instrument, one of only three found in world history) and armaments and militaria, the oldest of which are more than 800 years old, certainly deserve a mention.
11. amusement park New Holland
The New Holland Amusement Park near Elblag is an attraction that will delight not only the youngest tourists. It features the world's largest pneumatic slide in the shape of a giant lion, which measures almost 30 meters high! There are many attractions for children and adults, such as an ecological educational path, a rope park with two trails of varying difficulty, two bird sanctuaries (a bird sanctuary and the Island of Non-Lions), a playground for the youngest and several thematic islands, which refer in style to the world's greatest monuments (Moai Island and Stonehenge Island). Also impressive are the Island of Illusions, the Island of Monsters and the Viking Village, where you can learn about the life of the ancient Scandinavian warriors. An interesting way to visit some of the sites of New Holland is to take a water streetcar cruise. The complex also has restaurants and small fast food bars, rest areas and an intimate hotel.
12. the Museum of the City of Malbork
A visit to Malbork cannot end without a visit to the City Museum, which is housed in a historic merchant's villa. The museum specializes in temporary exhibitions, featuring works of art, documents, antique everyday objects and photographs, among others, related to the history of the city and the culture of the entire region. It also hosts numerous lectures, meetings with artists, art experts and historians, as well as workshops for children and young people, cyclical events, festivals and fairs.
The 13th Fountain in Malbork is counted among the city's biggest attractions. It is located in the center, right next to the promenade. It is distinguished by musical shows and light illuminations organized during the season.
Musical shows are held at: 12:05 p.m. (after the bugle), 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The duration is about 15 minutes.
