  • The Japanese Garden in Wroclaw is located in Szczytnicki Park. The Japanese Garden was established in 1909-1912 in connection with the 1913 World Exhibition, on the initiative of hr.abi Fritz von Hochberg of Ilowa and designed by Japanese gardener Mankichi Arai. Unfortunately, after the exhibition, most of the borrowed details, determining the Japanese character of the garden, were taken away. The Garden included a so-called pagoda, neglected and demolished in 1997. In 1996-97, with the cooperation of the Japanese embassy and Polish and Japanese gardeners from the city of Nagoya led by Yoshiki Takamura, work was carried out to restore the garden's Japanese character. Two months after the grand opening, in July 1997 during the flood of the century, the Garden was under water for three weeks. Approx. 70% of the vegetation needed to be replaced. The reopening took place in October 1999, and today it is already a Japanese Garden not only in name. It represents a living piece of Japanese culture, unique in Europe (a note on the ticket reads: "[...] The present shape of the garden is due to the work of Polish and Japanese specialists, led at the design stage by Prof. Ikuya Nishikawa. Japanese specialists in the construction of gardens, together with Polish companies, created in 2 years a beautiful corner with a typically Japanese character [...]"). Thanks to the presence of Japanese specialists, all designs and works, down to the smallest detail, correspond to the original Japanese garden art. Each element of the revalued garden has its own place and meaning, sometimes difficult to see for Europeans. The garden, while referring to the historical assumptions of 1913, at the same time acquired many completely new elements that give it a unique character. Now it is a destination for excursions and walks of Wroclaw citizens.
