  • The mine is first and foremost a magnificent technical monument, where you can admire the equipment and facilities. The nine levels of the mine are located at a depth of 327 metersci, all divided into 3,000 chambers. There are 360 kilometers of galleries throughout the mine, although only 1% of the total is open to the public. Interesting examples of sacred art can also be found in the mine. The multitude of sculptures of saints and numerous chapels are reminders of the constant sense of danger that affected the miners. Many magnificent salt reliefs depict biblical scenes, the most magnificent decorate the magnificent St. Kinga Chapel. This great chapel has its entire furnishings made of salt - from the floors to the chandeliers. Trips to the mines began as early as the Middle Ages, a noble observer of the miners' work was, among others, Nicolaus Copernicus. Today, the mines are visited by nearly a million people every year, most of them foreigners. The Wieliczka mine was included in the first UNESCO Cultural Heritage List in 1978, while in 1994 it was declared a Monument of National History by the President of Poland.
