  • The museum is located in the Ostrogski Palace. The history of the Palace dates back to the foundation of Prince Janusz Ostrogski in the early 17th century. In the 1680s, Crown Sub-Chancellor Jan Gninski commissioned Tielman van Gameren to design a palace residence. The architect created drawings of the never realized, large palace establishment. Today's Palace, erected on an earlier bastion, is located on the site of the planned kitchen buildings. The palace served various functions, being rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1859, the Institute of Music began operating there, renamed the Conservatory in 1919. These institutions continued the activities of the Music Department at the Faculty of Arts of the Royal University of Warsaw, from which Frederic Chopin graduated. At the beginning of the last century, a concert pavilion was built next to the palace, which was not rebuilt after the war. After its destruction in 1944, based on the surviving plans of Tylman van Gameren, drawings by Zygmunt Vogel and works by Canaletto, the Palace was rebuilt in 1949-54 according to the design of Mieczyslaw Kuzma. During the post-war reconstruction, efforts were made to return to the late 17th century form. The mission of the Frederic Chopin Museum is to cultivate the memory of the great Composer and to make knowledge of his life and work available to a wide audience. The goal of the Museum is to collect and transmit the highest quality knowledge and artistic experience, the individual choice of which will depend on the viewer. The innovative form of visiting will be based on interaction with the public and immediate response to the individual needs of visitors. The new Museum is not only a central institution for the 2010 Chopin Year celebrations, but first and foremost a national institution for the memory of Frederic Chopin. The long-term plan for the Museum's activities will help cement its identity in the public consciousness as a unique institution in Europe combining knowledge with art. http://chopin.museum/pl
