Botanical Garden subordinate to the University of Warsaw located in the central part of the capital in the vicinity of the Royal Baths Gardens. The smallest and at the same time one of thethe oldest gardens in Poland at almost 200 years old. The Botanical Garden was founded on the initiative of Michal Szubert and Jakub Frederick Hoffman in 1818. In the plant inventory, published in 1824, we find more than 10,000 species. Further development of the Garden was prevented by the battles of the November Uprising, as a result of which in 1834 the University was closed and the Garden's area was reduced, and only tsarist officials were in charge of the Garden. In 1916, the Botanical Garden passed again into the custody of the University of Warsaw. Prof. Zygmunt Wóycicki became its director. During World War II, all garden buildings and greenhouses lay in ruins, and the grounds became a huge pile of rubble. Actually the pre-war condition returned to the garden in 1987 when the plant biology department was restored to its historical shape, and the collections of roses, climbers, medicinal and useful plants were rebuilt and enriched. The Botanical Garden of Warsaw University can be visited from spring to autumn. It is visited annually by about 60,000 people. One of the priorities of the garden is to preserve biological diversity, both of wild plants and cultivated varieties. For several years, the first collection of endangered native varieties of ornamental trees and shrubs has been established. On the grounds of the botanical garden is the nucleus of the Temple of Divine Providence, which was to be built on the site. It is the cornerstone laid on May 3, 1792.
