St. James' Church was built in 1187 on the site of a sub-ground established by colonists from the west on what is now Cathedral Hill. The founder of the church was BeringerFrom Bamberg, settled in Szczecin. After reconstruction, the cathedral has a layout similar to the original one from the 15th century, i.e. five naves covered by a single hall roof, now covered with copper. A characteristic feature of the building is the buttresses introduced into the interior, allowing numerous chapels to be placed between them. Another peculiarity is the large chancel (choir), equal in size to the main hall. The northern wall of the body was rebuilt in contemporary style. The cathedral was solemnly consecrated on May 31, 1982 by Bishop Kazimierz Majdanski of Szczecin-Kamienna. It was elevated to the rank of Cathedral Basilica by Pope John Paul II, May 23, 1983, and to the rank of Archcathedral Basilica on March 25, 1992.
