09.02.2015The Cistercian abbey is made up of two elements: the late Romanesque church and the monastery buildings, which include - part of the eastern wing of the monastery with well-preservedThe abbey has a sacristy and chapter house, defensive walls, the ruins of the west and south wings, an arsenal, and outbuildings and residential buildings. In the central part of the abbey complex is the late Romanesque basilica of St. Thomas of Cantuary, built of Szydłowiec sandstone. It is a three-nave building built on a Latin cross plan with Baroque furnishings and wall paintings. Characteristically, it has no tower, only a signature tower. In addition, architecture lovers will be charmed by the numerous details found within the building, i.e. tympanum, numerous rosettes and stepped portal. A small museum exhibition including sacred elements is located in the chapter house with a Gothic cloister, which is the architectural jewel of the whole establishment. The abbey area is marked by defensive walls, including gates and towers, erected on an irregular polygonal plan. They were erected in the period from the 14th to the 16th century. Then inside this complex were built residential and economic buildings. Nowadays there is a hotel with a restaurant and a museum, where you can see memorabilia about the history of the abbey.
