On the pedestal mounted plate with the inscription: MATKA BOSKA BOLESNA REPLICKA Z OŁTARZA PAPIESKI SOPOT 5 VI 1999.The unveiling of the monument took place on September 15, 2000. The ceremony, in the presence of the author of the sculpture and the faithful, was celebrated by the prelate Marian Dziemianko. In 2002, the sculpture was set on fire, later doused twice with tar. Thanks to the efforts of the artist and the manager of the Communal Cemetery, the sculpture was returned to its original form. The original wooden Pieta was made by Boguslaw Migel in 1999. It was one of a dozen elements of the papal altar designed by Prof. Marian Kolodziej. The altar stood at the Sopot Hippodrome on the occasion of Pope John Paul II's visit to Poland in June 1999. After the papal pilgrimage ended, the sculptures from the Sopot altar were moved to the Matemblewo Sanctuary. A wooden replica of the Sławno Pieta, a few dozen centimeters in size, was given to Pope John Paul II in 2006. The gift from Slawno residents was handed over to the Pope in person by a delegation from Cles (Slawno's Italian partner city).
