09.07.2013An Underground Tourist Route has been designed for tourists. Its length is about 450m, the lowest chamber is almost 12m deep. The entrance to the underground leads from the dfrom the courtyard of the Oleśnickich Tenement House, and the exit by the Town Hall, in the Market Square. The route was created by connecting the basements of the buildings at 1,2 Opatowska Street, by the western wall of Market Square from 10 to 5, and under Oleśnickich, Opatowska, Bartolon and Market Streets. The preserved basements were protected by so-called secondary enclosures, and where possible, the original threads of the walling were preserved. The route includes 34 chambers on different levels. ------------------------------------------ History of Sandomierz's cellars. Wealthy towns, wealthy bourgeoisie, had the opportunity to build magnificent residential houses, churches, erect fortified walls and other buildings for the city. In centuries past, such wealth was provided by extensive trade, well-organized guild crafts. Medieval Sandomierz lay on trade routes and had the privilege of a depot. The city was prosperous, and despite the invasion of peoples from the east, fires and other disasters, it always rebuilt itself. Sandomierz merchants were engaged in trade, bringing goods from various directions, and were also supplied by visiting merchants. Warehouses were needed to store goods. The city, enclosed within the fortified walls, with its limited space, did not have the ability to build above-ground storage facilities. Instead, a whole system of cellars was built to serve as warehouses.
