Tumskie Hill - a promontory of the Vistula escarpment, on which the Płock castle was built. Casimir the Great built a brick castle in place of the wooden and earthen castle. In 1532, the spora part of the castle collapsed into the Vistula River as a result of a toppling of the undercut embankment. Remnants of the castle walls and buildings began to disappear after the second partition of Poland. Plock is the oldest city in Mazovia, located on a high escarpment over the Vistula River. Its origins date back to the 9th century. In the next century, Plock became the capital of Mazovia, and at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries, also of all of Poland. Plock's great asset is the beautiful view stretching from Tumskie Hill over the Vistula river valley. Unforgettable moments can also be spent visiting Plock's monuments: the cathedral, Poland's oldest high school - the Stanislaw Malachowski High School, and two museums - the Diocesan and the Mazovian with the largest collection of Art Nouveau art in Poland. After the second partition of Poland in 1793, Plock was annexed to Prussia, then became part of the Duchy of Warsaw, and after 1815 became part of the Kingdom of Poland. Due to its location, Plock was the site of many important events. It was in Plock that the November Uprising ended in 1831, as it was here that the last session of the Sejm of the Kingdom of Poland was held just before it went into exile. Another national uprising - the January Uprising - also began in Plock. The 20th century brought the city an attack by Bolshevik troops, which was repulsed thanks to the heroic attitude of the citizens, for which Plock was awarded the Cross of Valor. Among the city's most important monuments are the cathedral and the former castle of the Mazovian princes. Two museums in particular are worth a visit. The Mazovian Museum, which houses the largest collection of Art Nouveau art in Poland. They include objects of everyday life, painting, sculpture and art glass. The Diocesan Museum, on the other hand, in addition to sacred art, has a sizable collection of kontusz belts, as well as interesting archaeological finds.
