I took barely one photo. I think the rest of the fort was covered by earth, or I was looking wrong. There was supposedly a museum in this fort, but the door was locked with a massive padlock and nothingThere was no indication that anyone was farming behind that door. From this fort I started, in the next ones it was only better....

  • The forts in Piatnica - three powerful forts connected by a system of ramparts and moats, are a fragment of the 19th century fortifications of the Lomza Fortress. This is the best preserved and most developedbridgehead on the Narew River, where 3 forts are connected by underground passages. There is also talk of a hitherto unexplored tunnel running under the Narew River and connecting the forts with the Capuchin Fathers' monastery. The forts were the main point of resistance for Polish troops during the Battle of Lomza which was one of the battles of the 1939 September campaign. Fort III (between the roads from Lomza to Czarnocin and from Lomza to Kisielnica) is a mirror image of Fort I. It is currently the most damaged. The fort courtyard is preserved in its entirety and framed by battlements; only the southeast ambulance shelter is slightly cracked from an explosion, the other shelter in better condition. There was a moat around the perimeter, currently not preserved around the entire perimeter. In the northern face of the moat the escarpments of the rampart are well preserved. In the bottom of the moat, the doubled main caponier with a passage is slightly cracked. A mine gallery connects it to the western shoulder caponier. In the bottom of the moat, a boulder to the postern connecting the caponier with the emergency shelter is visible. The neck barracks have not survived, they are blown up, but huge lumps of their concrete parts lie in place. The "Fort Club" museum is located in one of the ambulance shelters at Fort III in Piatnica. In the shelter, which has been renovated and adapted for this purpose, exhibits related to the military history of the region have been collected - the oldest from the period of the Swedish wars.
