    Very good Stay: August 2014

According to the description found on the Internet, the best preserved fort in Piatnica. I even managed to get to the latrines, but did not use them despite the free space. Forts in Piatnics are generally asking for restoration, a wild tour should be preceded by a thorough analysis of available historical materials if you want to know what room you are in.

  • The forts in Piatnica - three powerful forts connected by a system of ramparts and moats, are a fragment of the 19th century fortifications of the Lomza Fortress. This is the best preserved and most developedbridgehead on the Narew River, where 3 forts are connected by underground passages. There is also talk of a hitherto unexplored tunnel running under the Narew River and connecting the forts with the Capuchin Fathers' monastery. The forts were the main point of resistance for Polish troops during the Battle of Lomza which was one of the battles of the 1939 September campaign. FORT I (on the road from Lomza to Drozdowo) is the best preserved. The inter-fort rampart with a moat extending from the Narew River is only slightly deformed. However, it seems that the processes leading to the deformation are still going on. There is a dilapidated berth in this rampart flanking the fort's courtyard and the moat towards the Narew River. The concrete neck barracks with a slope pen are in good condition and are relatively undamaged, undoubtedly suitable for adaptation. The courtyard shows concrete posts in which the fort's double grating was probably embedded.
