08.10.2011The museum was established through the efforts of former Auschwitz-Birkenau inmates, with the goal of preserving "for all time" the remains of the complex of German Nazi concentration camps.actions, including the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. The grounds and most of the buildings of the former Auschwitz I and Auschwitz-II Birkenau camps are open to visitors to the museum. Some of the buildings are off-limits to visitors (including the so-called reserve blocks, administration, and museum departments).
