The canal is unique in the world. Launched in 1860, ory ginally it was designed to transport timber. A ship sailing it overcomes a difference in height of 100m by means of five slipways, when it is rolled on special platforms. Sailing on the canal can be started in Elblag or Ostroda. Starting from Elblag, you first pass through Lake Druzhno, which is a strict waterfowl reserve. The aforementioned slipways are completely ecological, propelled by water flowing down from above. The entire cruise from Elblag to Ostroda takes about ten hours.
