Castle of the Warmian Chapter

Feedback

  • The castle of the Warmian chapter in Olsztyn was erected on the high bank of the Lyna River, making great use of the natural advantages of the area to situate this fortress. PIt is deduced that before the castle was built a new riverbed was dug, surrounding the wall with a moat. The castle houses the Museum of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, which was established in 1945. The castle is visible in the city from afar, and its mass is modeled on a similar one in Lidzbark Warmiński. It is a defensive building and has 3 wings - 2 Gothic and one Baroque. The most distinctive element of the walls is the main tower, as well as the high hurdy-gurdy suspended from the south wing. An important element of the castle is also St. Anne's chapel consecrated by the bishop of Warmia and well-known chronicler Martin Kromer in 1580.During the tour, you can trace the entire system of operation of the castle's facilities and see what a great logistical challenge it was. The fortress was ready not only to constantly keep the armed crew ready, but also to receive refugees appearing in case of danger. The building contained: the chancellery, refectory, chapel, treasury, armory, dungeon and cellars (housing barrels of liquor, but also ammunition). Of course, the kitchen, bakery, brewery, larder and fuel store were also integral. A few technical conveniences were also preserved - some rooms had toilets, some were heated, and a freight elevator, of which a shaft survives, was used for transportation from the cellars. Surrounding the castle were bathhouses, stables, coach houses, a salt store and a garden.
