North of Olkusz, on a high limestone rock rise the picturesque ruins of Rabsztyn Castle from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. It is believed that back in the 13th century on the shczycie rock an upper castle was built with a massive defensive tower. The castle, which was the seat of the starosty, was expanded in the 15th century, and a Renaissance palace was built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The castle was burned down during the Deluge. Reconstruction work has been carried out here for several years. The rebuilt gate houses an exhibition on the history of the castle. Every year, on the first weekend of July, spectacular knightly tournaments are held near the castle. Currently, due to archaeological and reconstruction work being carried out, the castle is not open to the public.
