The park was established on September 14, 1989, with an area of 25,330 hectares. The subject of protection is the landscape of the natural river valleys of the Warta River and its left-bank tributaryhe Oleśnica River, located in the Wieluń district, as well as the Widawka, Grabi, Nieciecza and Wierznica rivers with their numerous meanders and oxbow lakes. The area of the Park is distinguished in its surroundings by a varied relief, especially the picturesque gorges of the Warta River, where the relative heights of the slopes reach up to 45 meters. The most attractive scenic zones on the territory of Wieluń County are found in the vicinity of Konopnica and Strobin. The PKMWiW, due to the relatively small changes caused by human activity, is an area of great botanical interest. There are about 600 species of vascular plants from a variety of habitat groups in the Park. Particularly rich is the meadow, marsh and aquatic flora. On steep, sunny limestone slopes one encounters xerothermic grasslands, which are a great peculiarity in the center of Poland. Natural riverbeds, streams, oxbow lakes, bogs and wetlands provide shelter for many, often rare, animal species. Within the Park's boundaries of Wieluń County, there is the Holda forest reserve, 17 monumental trees in Konopnica, Rychłocice and Strobin, and the "Szynkielów" ecological utility. Within its boundaries, outside the Wieluń district, there are three reserves: a peat bog reserve - Grabica, a peat bog and forest reserve - Korzeń and a floristic reserve - Winnica, protecting xerothermic grasslands and thickets on the steep slope of the Warta River valley. The Park's landscape is shaped by interesting examples of historic manor houses (Rychłocice, Wielgie, Konopnica), a magnificent fortress dominating the Warta River valley in Konopnica and examples of wooden buildings in Rychłocice and Konopnica.
