Bison Breeding Center

Feedback

  • In the center of the Poszyna Wilderness is the Bison Breeding Center. Today it is a 70-hectare area fenced with a 3.5 km long concrete fence. The area is home to an averageie about 30 bison. The animals are bred here exclusively of the Bia這wie瘸-Kalaska line, with a length of 2.5 - 3.5 m. height at withers is 1.8 - 2 m. The animals' food consists of herbs, grass, young twigs, tree bark, etc. Bison have brown-colored fur, thick at the mane and neck, and short but massive legs. Each newborn calf is given a name beginning with the letter P (as is the case throughout Poland). The forest in the reserve is basically devoid of undergrowth, open and overgrown. It is a strict reserve with no visitors allowed. The history of the bison and the Bison Breeding Center in the Niepolomice Forest complex begins in 1925, but it was only a few years later in 1936 that the 36-hectare area was fenced with a solid wooden fence and divided into five quarters. The first herd numbered just three animals. The purpose of the establishment and existence of the Center is to preserve and protect the endangered species. The bison from the Niepołomice Forest are to be a safeguard in case of the need to replenish or increase the number of herds living in the wild.
