  • Church of St. Michael the Archangel - a Gothic wooden parish church in Debno Podhalanskie in the Nowy Targ district, inscribed with other wooden churches of the southernof Malopolska and Podkarpacie on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The first church in Debno was probably erected in the 13th century. The present church was built in the second half of the 15th century on the site of an older temple. The nave and chancel date from this period. It is an oriented temple with a log structure. It is one of the best preserved Gothic wooden churches and at the same time one of the most famous Polish monuments at home and abroad (it received as the only wooden church a nomination in the contest of the seven wonders of Poland), is distinguished by its silhouette (practically unchanged since the time of its construction) - integrated into the landscape and exceptionally valuable movable equipment, as well as a unique patronal polychrome dating from about 1500, the oldest, entirely preserved in Europe, made on wood. It is undoubtedly the best preserved polychrome of its kind in Poland. It is made in 33 colors and contains as many as 77 motifs in 12 arrangements. The most common are floral and geometric ornaments. There are also figural motifs and animals, among them mainly deer. The stencils were used many times in various objects, these probably, due to their secular nature in noble and magnate mansions[1]. Attention is drawn to the image of the Jagiellonian eagle above the rainbow beam. The tower with sloping walls, strongly narrowing towards the top, was erected in a post-and-frame structure, with a chamber, in 1601. Today it is one of the oldest structures of this type in Poland, it is believed that only the tower of the church in Binarowa is older. The roofs of the church, the canopies and walls of the tower and its helmet are lined with shingles, the walls of the tower's izbica were planked with boards with a decoratively carved crown at the bottom. The interior contains valuable monuments of Gothic sculpture and painting.
