    Very good Stay: July 2013

One of the walls is currently covered with scaffolding, as the revitalization of the castle is still underway. However, one can turn a blind eye to this minor flaw. Both towers are open for tours. Knowledge of the zamku can be deepened in the modern multimedia castle museum. Across the street is the Ciechan brewery and, as our guide assured us, it is possible to visit it after a phone consultation, but I didn't have time to do so this time.

  • When the construction of the Ciechanow castle began, which was around 1355, Prince Siemowit III of the line of the Mazovian Piasts reigned in Mazovia, which was a separate duchy. The castle's greatest period of splendor was the reign of Duke Janusz I, son of Siemowit, who, after the defeat of the Teutonic Knights at Grunwald in 1410, rebuilt Ciechanow Castle as his residence, erecting a grandiose residential building, raising the level of the courtyard by 1.5 meters and laying decorative paving. In 2005. The Museum of Mazovian Nobility in Ciechanow, the tenant of the site, announced a competition for the revitalization of the castle, wanting to revitalize the building. Archaeological research was restarted and a reconstruction project was made, incorporating modern architecture and functions into the ancient walls. This is because it is impossible, the castle can not be reconstructed in its historical form, as there are no any drawings of it from the medieval and Renaissance periods. Archaeological research carried out in 2007 - 2008 yielded unexpected results, as it turned out that in the lowest layers beneath the castle courtyard, wooden and stone-brick structures from the late 13th century were uncovered! Modern history is rewriting the history of the Castle of the Dukes of Mazovia in Ciechanow.
