    Stay: January 2010

I've been to a few games: against Sweden (I didn't have time to sit properly in my chair - it was already 0:1), against Hungary (we gave a foul with the Hungarian anthem) and against Portugal (such a winnertwa and such a game I would like to see again). The acoustics in this facility were unfortunately terrible, you could not hear what the other side was shouting, I had the impression that the players themselves could not hear what the fans from the stands were shouting. And the way the stadium looks now.... it's better not to mention....

  • The Silesian Stadium is the largest sports facility of its kind in Poland. Opened on July 22, 1956, it went down in the golden pages of Polish sports and culture, as it waswitnessed the most important sports and cultural events in Poland. Its attendance record of 120,000 thousand spectators was set at the match Górnik Zabrze-Austria Vienna in 1963. As early as October 20, 1957, Gerard Cieślik, one of the best players in the history of Polish football, with two magnificent goals secured victory for our national team over the then Soviet Union team (2:1). It was here many years later that Kazimierz Gorski's team, beating England (2:0, June 6, 1973) and Wales (3:0, September 26, 1973), began a great series that ended with third place in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. It was at the Silesian Stadium that Jacek Gmoch's charges on October 29, 1977, after a 1:1 draw with Portugal, secured their promotion to the 1978 World Cup finals in Argentina. Also, the Polish national team under Antoni Piechniczek just in Chorzow won promotion to the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico, drawing with the Belgian national team (0:0, September 11, 1985). Earlier, on May 2, 1981, a 1:0 victory against East Germany in a 1982 World Cup qualifier in Spain sparked the first promotion to the finals under Piechniczek. In 2001, on September 1, after a 3:0 victory over Norway at the Silesian Stadium, the national team led by Jerzy Engel celebrated the qualification of Polish players after a 16-year break to the 2002 World Cup finals in Korea and Japan. Also at the Chorzow stadium, Leo Beenhakker's charges, after a 2:0 win against Belgium (November 17, 2007), won a historic first promotion for Polish players to the finals of the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland. Unforgettable matches in European cups were played here by Górnik Zabrze. In its eventful history, the Silesian Stadium has hosted many stars of world and European football. Among them were Jaszyn, Pele, Di Stefano, Cruyff and Bobby Charlton. Speedway fans also have many wonderful memories associated with the Silesian Stadium. As many as seven times the world individual, team and pairs finals were held here. In 1973, on the track of this stadium, Polish speedway rider Jerzy Szczakiel won the gold medal of the Individual World Championships. It is worth remembering that in addition to football and speedway events, athletes and cyclists also provided fans with plenty of emotions. The facility, moreover, hosted not only athletes, great artistic events were held there. Recently, the stadium has become a venue for the organization of major rock concerts. Concerts of the bands AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, U2, Genesis, The Police were a real feast for fans of this music. And since 2009, it has hosted a monster truck competition - the world's most powerful sports cars - the Orlen Monster Jam.
