Upper Silesian Narrow Gauge Railway

With the end of the era of heavy industry in Upper Silesia, transportation was declining and the network was successively liquidated. Fortunately for posterity, the 21-kilometer line from Bytom ia to Miasteczko Slaskie was saved. In the still beating heart of the railroad - the Bytom Karb Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive Works - are stationed powerful 450-horsepower locomotives with engines from the Maybach company - the same one that produces exclusive limousines. And if we talk about luxury ? Bytom preserves the only active narrow-gauge saloon from 1912, which is said to have been traveled by Kaiser Wilhelm II himself. The iron route leads to, among other places, the Historic Silver Mine, the Szombierki Combined Heat and Power Plant, the Naklo-Chechlo Reservoir, the "Dolomity Sport Valley" sports center and the historic center of Tarnowskie Góry.

    Very good Stay: June 2013

Industriada 2013 All the narrow-gauge railroads I've visited so far need a sizable financial injection to make them shine. Here is a light in the tunnel that someonedo something about it, because some of the carriages that run on local routes look like from under a needle. To think that 100 years ago Bytom was the technological center of Europe, the richest people lived here.... and now... a crumbling open-air museum.
