Port on the south coast in the far west of the island, in a cove in front of which the Pakleni Islands lie. The climate is Mediterranean, with little rainfall. The winter s are very mild, good for the asthmatics and convalescents. The vegetation is subtropical and luxuriant (palm trees, agaves, laurel, myrtle, rosemary, lavender, pine, pine et al.). Today Hvar is a strong tourist center with many hotels, campsites, naturist beaches and a marina. At the time of the late Middle Ages the construction of the city walls was begun, extending with the heights to the east and west border of the main square. There is the oldest theater in Croatia in which after a renovation in 1806 the plays are still played. In the square there is also the cathedral of St. Stephen, a Renaissance building from the XVI.-XVII. century, that was built on the site of an old benedictine abbey from the XII. century.
